Profan-O-Matic: Wi-Fi-enabled authentic split-flap clock and four-letter-word machine
Sold out Full Project DetailsAutomated swearing at the touch of a button. Prompted by these trying times, when you have an expletive just on the tip of your tongue, the Profan-O-Matic will deliver one in glorious, clickety-clackety authentic retro splitflap style, just like we (well, some of us) may remember at a train station or airport.
As if that wasn't exciting enough, the Profan-O-Matic is now Wi-Fi enabled; from the web browser on your computer or phone (on your local network) you can:
- Check what is currently displayed
- Remotely operate the buttons
- Enter text to display
- Download word lists, and upload alternative or edited versions
- Check the status, update settings and apply any future firmware updates
There are 3 main modes:
- On demand - the green/yellow/red buttons correspond to lists of standard, innuendo-laden & downright rude words, in 4-letter and bonus 8-letter variants
- Continuous inspiration - stream profanities (or more innocent words) ad infinitum, with dial-in-able speed (and frequency of naughtier words)
- Clock - an authentic split-flap clock that, at a dial-in-able frequency, interrupts the monotony of your day with inspirational vocabulary
The video clip gives an overview - for more information (and to hear it) visit imgur.com/gallery/VNZPPNt (or search for Profan-O-Matic on imgur.com) to see/hear it in action; and see my build log so you can get a better idea of the handmade nature of the product itself.
Be warned that the actual product has much ruder words than you see on Etsy or the imgur gallery - search for Profan-O-Matic on YouTube for some more colourful language.
The rear panel can be easily removed to access the built-in SD card - if you do not or cannot connect via Wi-Fi, you can directly change the settings, update new firmware or change word lists via the card.
The case is veneered sheet with a gloss acrylic front panel, and It sits well on a desk, or can be wall hung. The dimensions are approx 360x200x80mm, not including buttons and knobs. There are two models listed - the only difference is literally just the model number that's engraved - entirely your preference for 455 or 8008 :) Currently the 455 is pictured but there's also a sample of the two engravings for comparison.
Note: this was a lot of fun to make but ultimately proved a bit too labour-intensive and/or expensive to build - I'm not planning any more of these but many thanks to the buyers!
